Our Story

Over 25 years of community in West Auckland

Founded through years of consultation with Waitemata District Health Board and a range of dedicated stakeholders, Te Ata was born from a shared vision — a consumer-run service where people could find genuine belonging and support.

Opening our Doors

Te Ata first opened in August 1998 and officially welcomed the public in October of that year. The result of years of meetings and consultation, it fulfilled the vision of a consumer-run mental health service for the people of West Auckland.

Room to grow

As Te Ata's member base grew, we moved to new premises on Lincoln Road. A space with a fantastic outdoor area including a vegetable garden. However, as attendance continued to grow, the indoor space became too cramped for our community.

Our home today

In March 2011, Te Ata moved into its current home. A converted warehouse with large, light-filled open spaces, two kitchens, an upstairs art studio, room for pool and table tennis, a board game area, and a good-sized outdoor space. A place truly built for community.
Current location

Te Ata provides a warm, welcoming environment that offers companionship and informal peer support. We look forward to many more years continuing to support our community in their mental health journey, management and recovery.

We provide a social space to meet and connect with peers. All our staff and volunteers (and most of our governance board) have lived experience of mental health challenges. We have classes, events, pool tables, table tennis, free wifi, a computer for members and a donations table.

Tea/instant coffee facilities etc are provided free for members.

We also have a Nespresso Machine and pods available ($2.00)

We have snacks that can be purchased from a member's canteen. All money collected goes back to members for funding event's etc.

We have monthly members meetings where members share ideas and make decisions on the day to day running of the center (including what groups/programs/events etc should happen). Members meetings are run by members with support from staff.
